The word chakra comes from the Sanskrit, meaning "wheel" or "disk". According to Hindu teachings, there are seven main chakras in the body, and each of these spinning wheels of energy is associated with a color. These moderators of subtle energy are traditionally depicted as lotus flowers, each resonating at different frequencies, corresponding to the colors of the rainbow.
The chakras are metaphysical vortices of energy originating in the ancient Indian system of healing, which positions them in seven major centres down the body. When they are in balance, each of the seven major chakras helps a particular part of the body to function perfectly. When unbalanced, dysfunctional, or "blocked", a whole range of mental, emotional, and physiological conditions can occur.
It is said to be vitally important for our general health and the prevention of illness or 'disease' that we nourish our chakras in the correct way.
The colors we gravitate toward, or avoid, can offer us personal insight. For example, if you are insecure, afraid of being alone, or suffer from poor memory, diabetes, or constipation - your Solar Plexus chakra (yellow) may be unbalanced. When you have an unbalanced chakra, it is suggested that you add more of that corresponding color into your lifestyle through clothing, jewelry, fragrances, certain foods, or even specific activities.
To the left there are two chakra charts created to give you a brief overview of each of the seven chakras and related information. You may be able to see a pattern of your likes and dislikes that go along with some of the chakras. Usually it is pretty easy to see in which of the seven chakras you are generally lacking stimulation during your daily life, and therefore figure out what you may want to add or practice in order to maintain a more perfectly balanced physical and emotional system.
